1. About Us

1.1. About Autism Resource Centre Singapore (ARC)

Autism Resource Centre (Singapore) (ARC(S)) is a not-for-profit charity based in Singapore. Started by a group of professionals and parent volunteers, ARC(S) is dedicated to serving children and adults on the autism spectrum through a wide range of services: Early Intervention, Pathlight School, Employability & Employment Centre, ARC Learning Academy, Student Enrichment, Social Leisure Club and our social enterprises, The Art Faculty and Professor Brawn.

1.2. About The Event

A Very Special Walk (AVSW) is the signature fundraising event of ARC(S). Since 2005, it has taken on the form of various activities, ranging from walks, walk + run, concerts, carnivals and even movie treats!

In 2020, undaunted by adversity, we organised our first-ever virtual AVSW amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. This will be the third year we are organising a virtual campaign.

The theme for this year"s campaign is A Very Special Journey! As ARC(S) journeys with the children we serve into adulthood, we are building services to meet their growing needs in employment, lifelong learning, training for independent living and residential housing options.

Funds raised from AVSW 2022 will go towards building these services to empower adults on the autism spectrum to lead independent and meaningful lives!

1.2.1. Pick A Journey/Challenge to Raise Funds

To participate in the event and help us raise funds, simply:

  • Sign up as a participant
  • Pick a journey/challenge
  • Complete your journey/challenge from 2 June to 22 July 2022
  • Share your journey/challenge on your preferred social media platforms and tag us @averyspecialwalk on Facebook and @avsw_arc on Instagram and hashtag #AVSW and #JourneyforChange22

1.2.3. AVSW Buddies

Our AVSW Buddies are friends and supporters of ARC(S) who have generously accepted the challenge to share their talent and influence to help raise funds for ARC(S)’s programmes and services.

Our Buddies will undertake a journey/challenge for AVSW. They will be sharing goals and progress from their journey/challenges to motivate and inspire other participants!

1.2.4. AVSW Participants

Participants can register at https://avsw.autism.org.sg to participate in AVSW individually or as a team.

1.2.5. What's New!

This year, all participants will get to customise their own profile page! You can unlock reward badges and achievement frames by raising donations, completing your journey/challenge or sharing your progress updates. You can also decorate your profile page by choosing up to 5 reward badges and an achievement frame!

2. This Year's Challenge: A Very Special Journey

For AVSW 2022, we have curated three very special journeys for you! These journeys feature places that are meaningful and significant to ARC(S)!

Journeys

2.1. Routes & Photo Pitstops

Route 1: Peirce Secondary School to Enabling Village (approx. 22 KM)(link to pdf)

2.2. The Journeys

Walk, run, cycle, take a bus or drive for any of these journeys. Follow the routes and take pictures at the suggested pitstops!

Remember to wear appropriate footwear and comfortable clothes, and stay hydrated! Have a safe and fun journey!

2.3. Customised Challenge

Do something active, creative or unique! Choose any activity that appeals to you – from walking, running, working out, baking, singing, writing poetry, picking litter, folding origami, the list goes on! Design a challenge that suits your ability and schedule!

Please note that the journey/challenge are taken at your own risk. ARC(S) is not liable for any injuries sustained.

2.4. Share your progress

Remember to take pictures/selfies to track your progress. Be sure to include the AVSW 2022 poster in your pictures. You may print a hard copy from your profile page or use a soft copy.

Share these pictures on your social media pages and/or your AVSW profile page and tell us about your experience! We may just feature you on our pages, so stay tuned!

2.5. Raise donations

As you share your progress, make a call for donations. Here’s a suggested text, "Hi, I’m taking part in A Very Special Walk 2022 to help Autism Resource Centre (ARC) raise funds. I will be taking on the 22 KM journey and am planning to do it on 2 June. Please support me and donate to ARC through my profile link, <insert your profile link here>. Funds raised will go towards programmes and services offered by ARC to enable their beneficiaries to lead independent and meaningful lives. Thank you for your support!"

3. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

3.1. General Questions

3.1.1. What is A Very Special Walk?

A Very Special Walk (AVSW) is the signature fundraising event of the Autism Resource Centre (Singapore). Since 2005, it has taken on the form of various activities, ranging from walks, walk + run, concerts, carnivals and even movie treats!

A Journey/Challenge is an activity a participant undertakes to help raise funds for AVSW this year. Participants can pick one or more suggested journeys or create their own customise challenge!

Participants can share their journey/challenge on their preferred social media platforms and tag us @averyspecialwalk on Facebook and @avsw_arc on Instagram. Remember to use our hashtags #AVSW and #JourneyforChange22. We may feature you on our pages, so stay tuned!

3.1.3. When is the registration period?

Registration is open from 2 June to 20 July 2022. Participants who have registered are encouraged to start raising funds for AVSW.

3.1.4. When is the challenge period?

The journey/challenge is to be completed during the challenge period from 2 June to 22 July 2022.

3.1.5. When is the online donation period?

Online donations will be accepted from 2 June to 31 July 2022.

3.1.6. Can anyone participate?

Yes, participants of all ages are welcome to register for AVSW 2022. However, participants under the age of 18 years old are required to obtain consent from their parents/guardians before registering for the campaign. They must also agree to the declaration stated on the registration form.

3.1.7. How would the donations that I raise be utilised?

All donations raised will go towards running the programmes and services offered by Autism Resource Centre (Singapore). These programmes help individuals on the autism spectrum maximise their potential in life through advocacy and provision of services in education, employment and empowerment of family caregivers and professionals.

3.1.8. If I am unable to complete my journey/challenge, what will happen to the donations that I have raised?

It is alright if you do not complete your journey/challenge. All donations raised during the campaign period will still be channelled to Autism Resource Centre (Singapore). No refunds of donations will be made even if journeys/challenges are incomplete.

3.1.9. How can I check on the donations that I or my team have raised and the people who have supported me?

You can view the amount you have raised on your profile or your team's profile page. The total donation amount that you or your team have raised and all your supporters will be shown on the page.

3.1.10. If there is no participant whom I would like to support, how can I still donate to support the campaign?

You may donate to support the campaign via this link. Your donation will go towards AVSW.

3.1.11. What are the online donation payment options available?

These are available payment options:

Credit Cards – PayPal is AVSW's authorised payment gateway for donations by credit card. Your donations will be annotated by "ARC - AVSW" in your credit card statements.

PayNow - Omise is AVSW's authorised payment processor for donations by PayNow. Please note that the name of the recipient that will appear in your bank statement is "Omise Payments SG Pte Ltd".

3.1.12. Are there any other means of donation if I do not wish to donate online?

Yes, you may also make a cheque donation to AVSW.

Please make a cheque payable to "AVSW" or "A Very Special Walk" indicating on the back your name, NRIC/FIN/UEN* and contact information (email address and phone number). Please mail the cheque to Autism Resource Centre (Singapore) – AVSW, 5 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10, Singapore 569739.

* Donations of $100 and above are eligible for a tax deduction. Please provide your NRIC/FIN/UEN for auto inclusion in your tax assessment.

3.1.13. Will there be any tax deduction for my donations?

Yes, there will be a 250% tax deduction for donations of S$100 and above. A tax-deductible receipt will be sent to you if you provide your Name (as in NRIC/FIN) and NRIC/FIN/UEN number along with your email address and phone number.

3.2.2. How do I register as a team?

You will need to register and verify your account here first. After which, create a team from your profile page. Check out the guide below for more information.

3.2.3. How do I invite my friends to join my team?

After creating your team (From your profile > Create Team), you can generate a unique invitation link to invite other members to join your team. (Team profile > Generate Invite Link)

Anyone with a valid AVSW22 account can open this link to accept your invitation.

Please note that:

  • Users who are not logged in or do not have a valid AVSW22 account will not be able to join your team.
  • The link is only valid for 48 hours. After which, you will have to generate a different invitation link.
  • Participants can only be in ONE team at any given time.

3.2.4. How do I join a team?

To join a team, you will need to:

  • Register and verify your account here
  • Have a unique invitation link created by the team's admin. Please request for the invitation link from him/her.
  • Once you have received the unique invitation link, ensure that you are logged in to your account, then open the invitation link from your browser.
  • Click "Join Team" and you will be added to the team automatically.

3.2.5. Is there a limit to the number of members in a team?

No, the more the merrier!

3.2.6. Can members of the same team do different challenges?

Yes, team members can do different challenges. A team is a collection of the individual members' profiles, donations and records.

3.2.7. How do I pick a Journey/Challenge?

After creating your profile account, you should complete the set up by choosing one of the two categories of activities: Journey/Challenge.

The Journey category offers three curated routes with pit stops of selected places that are significant to ARC(S). Participants can pick one of the routes as their challenge. Take pictures/selfies and upload on your profile page.

The best part is that when you have completed one journey, you may pick another journey to embark on! So, keep journeying with us!

Alternatively, you may create a customised challenge – an activity of your own choice as befitting your interest and schedule.

3.2.8. How do I unlock the achievement badges and frames?

Complete your journeys and raise the respective donation amounts to unlock them. Check your profile page regularly to see what new badges and frames you have unlocked!

To customise your profile, click the "Edit Profile" button on your profile page. Select the badges and frames that have been "unlocked".

3.2.9. What is the registration fee?

REGISTRATION IS FREE!

3.2.10. Can I sign up for more than one category?

You can only sign up for one category throughout the event (that is, Journey category/ Challenge category).

For the Journey category, participants can complete one or more suggested journeys. You must complete the selected journey before starting a new journey.

3.2.11. Can I change my category after signing up?

Please email your request to avsw@autism.org.sg. Kindly ensure that you get an acknowledgement reply from the Organiser.

3.2.12. How do I know if I have successfully registered?

You will receive an account verification email shortly after you complete your online registration.

3.2.13. Why did I not receive my verification email after completing the registration online?

This could be due to a variety of reasons:

  • Your registration was not successful and therefore the confirmation email was not sent.
  • There could be an error in your email at the point of registration, so the confirmation email was not sent to the correct email address.
  • The email has been blocked by your mail server and/or is treated as spam. Please check your junk mail.

Please email avsw@autism.org.sg and provide the email address used at the time of registration for the team to check on your registration status.

3.2.14. What happens after I register for the campaign?

Participants are encouraged to raise funds for AVSW from their friends and family members after registering for the campaign.

You can do so by sharing your profile link on WhatsApp, or your preferred social media platforms, and sharing about your journey/challenge.

3.2.15. How do I track my distance and time for my challenge(s)?

We accept results on the honour system, so you can track your distance and time from 2 June to 22 July 2022.

Although not mandatory, the most accurate way to do your tracking is by using a Running GPS watch, but there are also several free smartphone apps available for iPhones and Android devices that you may be interested in. Please see some suggestions for Free Run-Tracking Apps.

You could also track by updating your profile page with pictures and short write-ups of not more than 150 words.
